shareThe Indian Veterans Housing Opportunity Act of 2010, co-sponsored by Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., passed the Senate Monday night.

The legislation would discontinue the practice of counting veterans' disability compensation as income. Because housing assistance is based on income, the practice has often pushed disabled Native American veterans above the income threshold for housing assistance, or actually increased their rent.

The bill, which was also sponsored by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., passed the House of Representatives in April. It is now headed to the president's desk for signature.

Make Sure You alway's Have SWEET DREAMS From a friend on Yahoo.com

Psalm 4:1-8
"I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." (v. 8)

Let your last thought at night be a thought about your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The last thoughts that lie on our minds at night are powerful and determinative, for the door into the subconscious is opening and they drop in to work good or evil. It's bad enough struggling with evil thoughts while you are awake; don't let them take control while you are asleep. Your conscious mind may be inactive while you are asleep, not so the subconscious. The last thoughts lying in your mind as you go to sleep usually become the "playthings" of the subconscious, and it works on these during the hours you are asleep. If it is true that your mind is active while you are asleep - and there certainly seems to be plenty of evidence to support this theory, then make your mind work in a positive and not a negative way. Satan delights in dropping an evil thought into your mind during the moments immediately prior to sleep, because he knows that it will work destructively all through the night, influencing your attitudes and most likely preventing you from enjoying a peaceful night's sleep. Then when you wake, you find that not only do you have to face the problems of another day, but you also have to face them without having drawn fully on the resources available to you through sleep. Thus begins a recurring pattern which cannot help but drag you down. So learn to elbow out any evil thought that enters your mind just before sleep, and let your last thought be a thought of Christ.

Prayer:

Father, if it is true that my mind works when I am asleep, then help me to make it work for good and not for evil. Teach me the art of holding a thought about You on my mind immediately prior to going to sleep. I shall begin tonight, Lord. Amen

Kaydence Weenusk, left, and brother Elrick from Oxford House demonstrate outside federal offices in Winnipeg Friday.
Students at Oxford House First Nation have not attended regular classes since January because their school is contaminated with mould, while kids in an Interlake aboriginal community are studying in portable classrooms because their school is infested with snakes.

Aboriginal leaders cited those and other complaints at a Winnipeg rally Friday to make the case that Ottawa is shortchanging First Nation communities when it comes to education.

Ron Evans, grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, said the state of First Nation schools is "deplorable."

Three aboriginal schools, including two in fly-in communities, are closed, while others are plagued by overcrowding, mould and deterioration, the AMC said Friday.

Lake St. Martin First Nation kids learn in portable classes because their school has snakes. Another northern school has operated out of makeshift classrooms for 15 years.

"How do you attract good quality teachers in those kind of environments?" said Evans, who told more than 100 peaceful protesters outside the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) office on Hargrave Street that many First Nation schools receive 20 to 200 per cent less funding than neighbouring schools outside their communities.

"We want to be lawyers, we want to be doctors, we want to be plumbers, we want to be electricians. We want all of these things. But you can't have those things if you don't have the resources to get the education that you need," he said.

Brigette Weenusk, who attended the protest with her daughter, Kaydence, 5, and son Elrick, 2, said her four school-age children only attend classes once or twice a week at Oxford House because there aren't enough portable classrooms and other community spaces available for the kids. Students go to school in rotation.

A Winnipeg spokeswoman for INAC said Friday the mould-contaminated school won't be repaired until January, meaning the kids won't have attended regular classes for a full year.

Weenusk said she's also worried the mould problem will persist once the school reopens and her kids will get sick, as they did last year before it was closed.

The chief of Lake Manitoba First Nation renewed complaints Friday that the 80 high school students who are bused from his community to Lundar face discrimination and racism at the school and from the community.

Chief Barry Swan said the latest incident involved a non-aboriginal parent who demanded to know, in a visit to the school office last Wednesday, "What the F are they (Lake Manitoba First Nation students) doing in Lundar?" Swan has demanded a meeting with provincial officials and is threatening to file a human rights complaint.

Janet Martell, superintendent of Lake Shore School Division, which takes in Lundar School, attended Friday's protest. She did not comment on the alleged incident but said she will meet with Lake Manitoba First Nation leaders next week. "We work to teach our students about tolerance and acceptance, whether that is ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation..." she said.

Gerald Farthing, the deputy minister of education, said he is concerned. "We want those kids to feel welcome at the school and we want them to do well," he said. Farthing plans to travel to the area to meet with First Nation leaders and school officials.

Native American Soldier Survives PTSD

shareEditor's note: This is the second of two parts about the challenges that local soldiers and their families face during combat deployments. Today's story addresses the effects of post traumatic stress disorder.

Howard Rooks is proof that post traumatic stress disorder can be overcome.

After losing his family, his job and his sobriety, the Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran is now sober, reunited with his wife and a proud new father to a 4-month-old son.

The witty 39-year-old from Kyle laughs easily during a break from his job with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Highway Department. He's willing to talk candidly about his struggle with PTSD, mostly because he wants others to know there is help. He believes the treatment he received at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Hot Springs literally saved his life.

Rooks served with the United States Army from March 2003 through March 2004, during the first days of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He jokes that he was the old man of his unit. At age 31, only one soldier was older.

Rooks had always wanted to serve in the military, but his father discouraged it. Rooks' grandfather had returned from World War II with severe PTSD, then called shell shock. It destroyed his life. Rooks' father didn't want the same for his son.

When his father died, Rooks decided to join anyway.

"I just wanted to see how it was ... follow in my grandfather's footsteps," he said.

He never imagined how far he would follow those footsteps.

Rooks' army unit went into Iraq in the first days of the war, traveling through Kuwait, into Baghdad and up to the Syrian border.

As a recon driver and radar operator, Rooks and his unit were at the forefront of fighting. The things he saw there changed his life.

At first, Rooks will say only that he saw "a lot of bad things."

Later, he recalls seeing bodies beside the road, bloated and swollen in the Iraqi heat.

"You just absorb what you see and just keep moving on because you have a mission," he said. "When you have down time, you end up thinking about them. It's something I wouldn't want other people to see."

While those images were horrific and hard to forget, his duties as a soldier were even more difficult to reconcile.

Rooks distinctly remembers his first kill and the emotions that came with it. Iraqi soldiers were hammering American soldiers with artillery and had been for most of a day. Rooks and another soldier struggled to track the origin of the assault. At 2 a.m., they finally pinpointed the position and mortared the enemy fighters, killing eight men.

"The exhilaration lasted about 15 minutes," Rooks said. "We were all excited. Then we smoked a cigarette. That's when the reality set in. ... We just killed eight people."

He tried to talk about the experience with his buddy, but his friend didn't want to talk about it, encouraging Rooks to forget about it. But Rooks never could. Neither could his friend, who is struggling with PTSD as well.

"I was just thinking I killed these people. I'm going to hell," Rooks said. "Every day I think about it."

Other experiences added to those feelings of guilt, remorse and confusion. When he and his fellow soldiers were ordered to shoot a truck driver speeding toward a road blockade, Rooks did the best he could to deal with the reality of his job.

"After I shot that guy, I went back to my cot and pulled out a magazine and started reading like nothing happened," he said. "It's a feeling of numbness."

Despite a concerted effort by the military to acknowledge and address

PTSD, Rooks admits that the culture of soldiers still encourages a quiet courage.

"It's like an atmosphere of ‘Let's not even mention it.' ... It's hard core," he said.

He didn't talk about his feelings with his fellow soldiers, some of whom he refers to as his brothers. The feelings were shoved down.

When he returned, those feelings refused to stay down.

After his discharge in September 2004, Rooks returned home a changed man. He couldn't tell his wife of 16 years that he loved her. He suffered nightmares almost nightly, swearing, thrashing and reliving his time in Iraq. Sometimes the dreams were of his experiences. Other times, Rooks dreamt he was being killed.

He lost his first job as a water technician in Kyle after only five months.

Prior to his deployment, Rooks drank an average of about two beers a month. After his return, he began drinking daily.

"It was unusual for me," he said. Drinking was often the only thing that would stop the nightmares, he said.

Rooks said he realized things were going nowhere pretty quickly, and even discussed the problem with military personnel. They offered him help, but he refused.

"I thought I could deal with it myself," he said. "I toughed it out for four more years."

Eventually, Rooks left his wife and the couple divorced. He stopped seeing friends and family. Rooks said now he realizes he was isolating himself. For two years, he didn't work and drank every day.

"I was going downhill pretty quickly," he said.

Eventually, he returned to the military life, joining the South Dakota Army National Guard. It was through the Guard that he began the road back.

"One day, I was like, ‘I can't do this anymore,'" he said. "I knew I was really screwing up. I wanted my family back and my life back."

A fellow Guard member helped enroll Rooks in an alcohol treatment program for veterans. While waiting for the program to begin, he called his ex-wife, Misty. She came for him immediately, giving him a place to stay while he waited.

Rooks went through treatment for a drinking problem in March 2009. While there, he recognized that he desperately needed help for post traumatic stress disorder, too.

After taking a break to earn a little money, he joined the PTSD program in January 2010. It wasn't easy, he said.

"The first three weeks weren't too bad," he said. "It did get tough around week five. ... I almost walked out, but I toughed it out and it really helped."

Rooks finally began to see his work as a soldier in a different light.

The treatment helped him understand that by doing his job, which sometimes required him to kill enemy soldiers, he had saved his fellow soldiers' lives.

He also took comfort in the other soldiers going through treatment.

Before, Rooks never talked to anyone about what he did and saw. During treatment, he could talk and he knew that the others understood.

"We all shared the same thing," he said. "There's a bond there. ... It's not like you're out there alone."

Rooks completed treatment and began building his life again. He and Misty reunited, and, though they had struggled with infertility for years, discovered they were going to have a baby. Howard Jr. is 4 months old now, doing well after a recent bout with pneumonia.

Rooks continues to serve in the National Guard and works full time in Pine Ridge.

Though thankful for his own treatment and recovery, Rooks can't help but think about his grandfather.

"I wish they knew about it a long time ago ... back when they used to call it shell shock," he said.

He continues to have contact with the military buddy who assisted in the bombing that killed eight Iraqis. Rooks said he plans to visit him soon.

"He is going through the same thing," he said. "He was thinking about suicide."

Rooks wants him to know that he can have his life back and that treatment is the first step.

"You deal with what you did out there," he said

I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. John 6:38

He ... became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Phil. 2:8

In the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered. Heb. 5:7, 8

Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? Matt. 26:53

Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke

I would like to commend you for your outlook. It's really refreshing and inspiring.I have 3 yrs clean, we just got a new counselor at our meetings and she has 3 yrs clean & sober also. I thought to myself, I could be a counselor by now helping others with Addiction & Alcohol problems. Especially that I am Native American, we need all the help that we can get. Especially role models of recovered Addicts. It has made me take a real good look at myself and wonder what I'm waiting for? I have been helping other's any chance that I get. But, being a Counselor & getting paid isn't the same. I would be actually being doing something for my fellow man. I have alot of thinking to do. I have accumulated alot of tools in my soberiety. It my chance to use them to better someone else now!

shareFormer Southwest Washington Congresswoman Linda Smith was back in the nation's capital on familiar turf Wednesday, testifying before a House subcommittee in support of a bill aimed at combating sex trafficking of minors. It's a topic in which Smith has developed considerable expertise since founding Shared Hope International in 1998 to "rescue and restore women and children in crisis." The Vancouver-based nonprofit is a leader in the battle against human trafficking worldwide, due largely to Smith's fierce dedication, strong work ethic and practiced political skills.

Last year, Shared Hope International completed what must be regarded as the definitive study of the sexual exploitation of children in the United States. The bulk of the research, funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant, was conducted in nine U.S. cities and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory. A private grant provided for additional research in Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

Despite more than a decade's experience working with victims of human trafficking, Smith said last fall that she was "shocked" by what the investigation revealed.

Researchers put the number of sexually exploited children in U.S. cities at upward of 100,000. "What we found," Smith told Daily News reporter Cheryll A. Borgaard, "is I can go to Craiglist or a strip club or an adult shop anywhere to find a minor for sex. There's no town, I don't care where; if there's buyers, there's sellers."

In her testimony Wednesday on Capitol Hill, Smith lamented the fact that young victims of domestic sex trafficking too often are treated as oenders. According to a report of the hearing by Joseph Picard of the International Business Times, Smith testified that sex-trafficking victims, whose average initial exploitation age is 13, are often treated as juvenile delinquents or adult prostitutes by the criminal justice system. "Those who are identified as minors are frequently charged with a delinquent act, either prostitution-related activities or a related offense such as drug possession," Smith explained. That treatment, Smith added, only compounds the trauma of the sexual violence the minor has already experienced.

The bill Smith's testimony supported — the Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Deterrence and Victims Support Act of 2010 — would help promote a more victim-centered approach to addressing minor sex trafficking. It would authorize block grants to both help combat sex trafficking and provide services to minor victims of sex trafficking.

Minor victims would get shelter, substance abuse treatment, counseling and legal services. Law enforcement would receive specialized training on sex trafficking and grant funds for investigating and prosecuting the sex traffickers who exploit minors.

Smith told the House subcommittee it's important not only that young victims of sex trafficking be identified and treated as victims, but also that traffickers and their buyers be apprehended and prosecuted. This legislation, H.R. 5575, would help do both

GETTING ALCOHOLISM RIGHT IN INDIAN COUNTRY by Mike Eshkibok

VIEWPOINT : Getting alcoholism right in Indian Country
By Mike Eshkibok, Grand Forks Herald ND
Published Monday, March 05, 2007

GRAND FORKS - It's true that alcoholism and drug abuse have caused terrible problems for many North American Indians. But it's also true that great numbers of Indians can drink socially (or not drink at all) and not incur serious problems. For the media, striking a balance between those two facts is central to "getting the story right."

Alcoholism's prevalence among Indians not only has caused enormous physical and emotional problems. It also has led to stereotyping, including in movies as recent and popular as "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Apocalypto." These powerful films depict Indians in a violent or stereotypical way, suggesting that all Indians are afflicted with drug and alcohol problems.

Like all stereotypes, this one is inaccurate because it ignores the uniqueness of each individual. One might expect a more balanced portrayal of Indians in the world of science; but unfortunately, scientific inquiry - with its emphasis on defining and solving problems - has not focused on the vast number of Indians who maintain sober and productive lives.

Then there is the fact that science and the media have focused on Indians living on reservations, even though for decades, the federal government enforced an assimilationist policy that removed Indians from their lands and made their coping mechanisms illegal. Before European colonization started, Indians were relatively unaffected by alcohol. Although some tribes produced weak beers or other fermented beverages, these generally were used for ceremonial purposes. The distillation of more potent forms of alcohol was unknown.

When European colonists suddenly made large quantities of distilled spirits available, the Indians had little time to develop legal, moral and social procedures to regulate alcohol use. Traders found that providing free alcohol during trading gave them an advantage in their negotiations with Indians. Extreme intoxication was common among the colonists, and was a powerful example for the social use of alcohol among the inexperienced Indian population.

Thus, history may have sown the seeds for the prevalence of alcohol abuse among today's Indians. Early demand, no regulation and strong encouragement likely helped form a "tradition" of heavy alcohol use passed down from generation to generation, which has led to the current high level of alcohol-related problems.

But remember: A "high level" does not mean 100 percent or anything close to it.

Today, educated American Indians themselves must keep this in mind, as they study and testify about the alcoholism rate on reservations, said Monique Vondall-Rieke, director of the Native Media Center at UND.

And "it's important to set the record straight," Vondall-Rieke added.

"When you come from a race of people who have been annihilated, assimilated and culturally stripped of their lifestyles, you are bound to have these social problems and other pitfalls. These social ills are historically proven to be a direct result of the negative attitudes people have taken toward American Indians. I believe we need to address the public relations at home in each American Indian community at the same time we try to help mainstream media to 'get the story right.'"

Unfortunately, stereotypes are all that most Americans use to define Indian people, said Donna Brown, assistant director at UND's American Indian Student Services.

"To dispel stereotypes, people need to take it upon themselves to visit organizations such as the schools, colleges and hospitals on Indian reservations," Brown added.

"They would find that life is not all negative, and that Indian people have goals and hope for the future, just like everyone else."

A personal note: When I was young, I did not know that I suffered from alcoholism, because all of the whites and Indians I knew drank like I did. Today, I have not taken a drink in 25 years. This has made me more aware of alcohol's effects and consequences, and I know today that the answers to my problems lie within me and with the God of my understanding.

I found my answers through Alcoholics Anonymous' 12-step program. There are a lot of similarities between AA and American Indian culture, especially the parts about sharing and living in the present.

Fighting an addiction can be a lonely journey. Spirituality is the best way I know of to overcome any addiction.

As mentioned above, great numbers of Indians can drink socially and not incur serious problems. But for those Indians who can't, going back to their own culture and traditions that allowed us to survive for tens of thousands of years would be a move in the right direction. To sum up, what we are saying is this: "Walk a mile in my moccasins before you criticize me."

Eshkibok, an Ojibwe Indian, is a doctoral student at the UND School of Communication.

Mark 11:25 ~ Truly Forgive

Mark 11:25 ~ Truly ForgiveMark 11:25 ~ Truly Forgive Sep 10, '10 by Vicky for everyone

And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins." ~ Mark 11:25
On Facebook someone posted:
On this day God wants you to know that no matter how good you try to be to others, you will occasionally hurt them. Forgive yourself for it. The same will happen with them. Forgive them for it.
God tells us that we must forgive in order to be forgiven. We say that we do and too often we do not. The moment we turn up our nose at someone, speak against them or gossip about them we have destroyed the bonds of forgiveness with our Lord.
To be fruitful in good works we must be loving, forgiving, giving and kind. When our mouth or our mind grumble about another being, the very fruit we think we are producing rots and falls from the tree. Our faith in God can help us to see others in the light of His love. No matter that we like or dislike their looks, demeanor or actions, we must remember that God loves them as much as He does us. When we rise up in judgment of another we place His judgment on our own head and will reap that which we sow. As we build mountains between one another we place walls between self and our Father in Heaven. We must, too, remember to forgive self and know that as we ask, He forgives our faults.
Father, we pray first to seek You and Your kingdom. We pray for the wisdom and strength to not sin, in spirit and in truth. Show us those whom we harbor angst against and show us when we, perhaps, do not realize that we do not stand justly in Your sight. Too often we are fooled by self or the enemy and we think we are justified. Thank You for the reminder that we are only justified by You and the death of Christ on the cross. By all other standards we are truly awry and must continue in a faithful, obedient relationship with You that we might see the light clearly. Thank You, Lord, for Your mercy and grace on our imperfect perceptions. ~ In Jesus name, Amen.

Soda Truths

There's also the matter of high salt (sodium) in sodas. That's not good for blood-pressure, and it actually makes us thirstier, causing us to want to buy and consume more. Also, soda's are rather acidic. The carbolic acid in them can throw the ph level our bodies off balance, leading to other problems, like stiff joints, digestion problems, ulcers, etc.

If you have a daily soda habit, please give it to God in prayer, and stop it immediately. If you do only that, you might actually lose 3-5 pounds per month. Sodas are that harmful and fattening. As the ad says, have water, seltzer, or low-fat milk instead.

Do YOU have a soda habit or addiction -- give it up in print with a comment, below. AND/OR, please share your ideas for healthy drinks.

Weight Loss and the Becoming Process

Weight Loss and the Becoming ProcessWeight Loss and the Becoming Process

Today I would like to feature a guest blog by a talented, sensitive, compassionate author, speaker and personal coach, Kanta Bosniak. Full disclosure, she's my sister-in-law. I'm so proud of her and the excellent work she does.

___________

by Kanta Bosniak

I love the title of Dr. Norris's blog: "Satisfied Life." Why? Because it speaks of a mindset that works for weight loss and for any accomplishment. Gratitude awareness. The assumption of meaning, order and purpose is not just a good idea. It's practical, and it can color your entire experience of weight loss.

When you meet a challenge with the assumption that there is a gift, not only in the outcome, but in the process you will go through to achieve the outcome, it's as if you plugged yourself into an infinite power source. You will find that you have so much more energy to draw on! This attitude of positive expectation is pivotal to what I call your "Becoming Process," becoming who you really are. Wholly you.

My own experience of weight loss taught me about wholeness. What a huge gift that was! When I thought of myself as whole and complete, I noticed that neediness and craving dropped away. The more I practiced self-appreciation and the appreciation of life, the less hungry I was and the more I enjoyed my food. I paid better attention to my deeper needs. The transitory ones came into balance and order, and I felt more satisfied and at peace.

If you're paying attention, desires shift. Food, sex, and acquisition become less important. They take their place as part of a whole, joyous and balanced life, and they cease to be compulsions. The needs for autonomy, self-expression and contribution are felt more keenly. You begin to feel these not as preferences but more as urges...as you need air to breathe.

Successful weight loss really is a spiritual journey of spiritual transformation, because it goes directly to the replacement of transitory pleasure with lasting joy. You learn to nourish your soul. You cease futile attempts to meet non-physical needs with a substance and go right for the "food" of the soul. Nothing wrong with a brownie once in a while! But it's not our Source, not our Higher Power, not anything more than... a brownie. What a relief!

Yes, relief. The quest for spirit is a universal one. We all thirst for limitlessness and hunger for a feeling of connection with God. "The very purpose of our lives," says the Dali Lama, "is to seek happiness." And there is, if we do not pursue our purpose, a kind of low level anxiety that ramps up the longer we deny it. The rigid outer-based approach to weight loss does not address the real issues and so it rarely succeeds. Begin with inner changes and healthy eating and exercise become natural, easy and much more fun! You discover that what you thought of as "tough stuff": weight loss, a project that you entered into with gritted teeth and steely determination, hoping to survive...turns out to be a pathway to satisfaction, gratitude and joy.

Now this is already happening, I certainly hope that this PASTOR is happy for getting people riled up over his crime against a fellow Religion. He should and better be ashamed of this happening and he better make a statement now before more repercussions come out of it!

Faith, Hope & Charity Inspiration...The Glory Rightfully Belongs to

"It is not good to eat much honey:
so for men to search their own glory
is not glory."
Proverbs 25:27

The "Glory" Rightfully Belongs to God

How often do Christian's seek some type of reward for a task which they said was done for the Lord? And how often do Christian's just give up and quit because they aren't "thanked" enough for the tasks they perform?

True Christianity means:
Serve . . . even when we are not being served.
Love . . . even when we may not be loved.
Help . . . even when we have not been helped.
Give . . . even when we have not received.
Please . . . even if others do not please us.

How often have you felt the precious thrill that comes from just being in God's will? Do you count earth's glory dim compared to the joy of serving Him?

The Bible urges us, "Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment." In order to see ourselves realistically we must "In humility receive the implanted word . . ." Then we must use that word as a mirror in order to see our true spiritual condition and change what needs changing.
(Scripture references: Romans 12:3, James 1:21, 23-25)

What is it your heart longs for?
Praise of people or glorifying the Lord?

Not unto us, O Lord,
but unto Thy name we give the glory!
Serving in His Unconditional Love,
Sandy

Jesus is our One true source of joy!
NOTHING compares to the promise we have in Him!

"The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
The LORD make his face shine upon thee,
and be gracious unto thee:
The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee,
and give thee peace."
Numbers 6:24-26

Even if they are told to do things they just pretend they will work it out, but the truth is they are GREEDY beyond anyone's kNowledge. And alway's will be to the END of course

YOUR WORK MATTERS TO GOD (3) Dr. Adrian Rogers

Your Work Matters To God (3)

Work... as... for the Lord...

Dr Adrian Rogers said, 'God takes ordinary people and gives them power to do extraordinary things. Whether you put hub caps on tyres... key in data... dig ditches or wash dishes, "Work... as... for the Lord... "( Colossians 3:23 NLT). Jesus' home was the cottage of a working man. Mending ploughs or mending souls, Jesus was doing God's work because people need houses and furniture. Knowing you're serving the Lord puts dignity in running a machine, greasing cars, carrying mail, painting houses, or cutting grass. Tell God, "I'm doing this for you and I'll do it with all my might"... That kind of attitude puts a spring in your step... You're a priest of God... in full-time service, and if that doesn't ring your bell - your clapper's broken!' As Leigh Priebe Kearney says, 'No job's perfect... there'll always be things you aren't thrilled about. See the big picture: find out where the company's heading and how you fit in. Reach out: ask what's important to your co-workers and how you can help them.' You can have almost anything you want, if you help enough other people get what they want. Remember the three Cs: 1) commitment. Workers who get ahead share a sense of commitment: they're fully engaged in their work 2) control. They're proactive, not passive 3) challenge. They see stressful situations as opportunities for growth. Don't wait for your ship to come in - swim out to meet it! Management won't suddenly recognise your potential, pluck you from obscurity and rocket you to the top. Draft a plan, then talk to your boss. A game plan shows you're open to professional growth. Keep learning: talk to people from other departments, take classes, and tackle projects outside your comfort zone.
